Before radio, television and social networks, the general public knew little more of the great conflicts taking place on the other side of the world, above and beyond what a handful of journalists had to say about these events in the papers. Some of the journalists even took an active part in these historical events, such as John Reed who was in Petrograd in 1917. Others were present as witnesses and encountered exceptional people or the traumatized victims of those troubled times.
