Perhaps more than in any other developed country, the notions of equilibrium, respect and harmony in nature are at the centre of Japanese culture. But in Japan, as elsewhere, man’s greed is undermining this fragile equilibrium. To remind us of the urgent need to maintain a balance, and the terrible dangers that lie ahead if we push the limits of sustainability too far, creators like Miyazaki have made these themes universal in their work.
